Connecting Côte d’Ivoire to the energy of tomorrow
Côte d'Ivoire and the European Union are working together to accelerate the transition to green energy. Through Global Gateway and the international pledging campaign ‘Scaling up Renewables in Africa’ , the European Union is leading efforts to rapidly expand renewable energy across the continent, aiming to triple clean energy capacity by 2030. In Côte d'Ivoire this means investing in hydroelectric dams, electrification and transmission lines to provide clean, reliable and affordable electricity. These efforts create a positive impact on people’s lives, today and tomorrow.
Meet Richard
I’m Richard, a sculptor passed from father to son. I’ve been passionate about this craft from a young age, and now I proudly represent the arts and crafts sector in Marcory as the first vice president and elected president of the National Chamber of Trades of Côte d'Ivoire.
Thanks to energy becoming more reliable, my workshop stays lit, and my tools keep running, allowing me to refine my craft.
This energy will also enable me to pass on my skills to my children, just as they’ve been passed down for generations. It will give me the ability to train young school dropouts and children on the streets, offering them a future through this profession. I believe in a future where our craft continues to grow, powered by sustainable energy.
Meet Ahou
I’m Ahou, and dance is my passion, my language, and my way of life. Whether I’m rehearsing new choreographies, perfecting my technique, or performing on stage, movement fuels my spirit and connects me to the world.
Thanks to clean and reliable energy, rehearsal spaces will stay lit, and sound systems will keep playing.
Reliable power means I will be able to refine my art and inspire others through dance – day and night. With every step, I embrace the freedom of movement and the happiness it brings. That’s why I believe in moving forward, not just in dance, but in the way we use energy.

Scaling up Renewables in Africa campaign
Part of a bigger mission
Africa has the power to become the most sustainable continent in the world. But despite this potential, millions of people across the continent still lack access to electricity. As Africa’s population and global climate challenges grow, the ‘Scaling up Renewables in Africa’ pledging campaign aims to unlock that potential. This transition via Global Gateway investments will provide affordable, sustainable, and reliable energy to the African people, while creating jobs and driving long-term growth.
ENERGY PROGRAMMES IN CÔTE D'IVOIRE
Delivering solar power to 150,000 people in Northern Côte d’Ivoire
Global Gateway flagship initiative
The 37.5 MW Boundiali solar power plant, operational since April 2024, is transforming energy access in Northern Côte d’Ivoire. Supported by the European Union through Global Gateway, it supplies clean electricity to about 150,000 people, improving living conditions and reducing energy poverty. With integrated battery storage for enhanced reliability, the project reduces fossil fuel dependence and supports Côte d’Ivoire’s target of 45% renewable energy by 2030.
Bringing reliable, clean energy to rural communities
Global Gateway flagship initiative
The Water & Sun Alliance (WASUNA) programme strengthens Côte d’Ivoire’s energy system by upgrading hydropower plants and introducing solar power with storage. The result: more stable and reliable electricity for rural and underserved communities, improving conditions for households, schools, and local businesses. Funded by the European Union through Global Gateway and Team Europe (EU, AFD, EIB and KFW), WASUNA empowers inclusive development while reducing fossil fuel dependence.
Connecting 1 million people to a cleaner, stronger grid
Global Gateway initiative
The Dorsale Est project aims to build a 541 km high-voltage transmission line (400 kV) to connect key regions in Côte d’Ivoire. The phase 1 of the project being implemented will build 289 km high transmission line (400 kV) from Anyama – Daoukro to Sérébou. This will improve electricity access and reliability for over one million people, enable clean energy integration, and reduce power losses. With EU backing, this infrastructure is a vital part of the country’s push for 45% renewables by 2030 and for spreading economic opportunity across the energy corridor.
Powering rural growth with the Sérébou solar plant
Global Gateway initiative
The Sérébou solar power plant will provide clean electricity to over 72,000 people, powering homes, schools, and small businesses in remote areas. By enabling reliable energy access, it improves education outcomes, supports local entrepreneurship, creates jobs and enhances healthcare services. Supported by the EU under Global Gateway, Sérébou plays a vital role in advancing Côte d’Ivoire’s energy transition and rural development.
