Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the Commission, met today with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, Chrystia Freeland.

Text

Their bilateral meeting was preceded by a working lunch with Commissioner for trade, Cecilia Malmström.

The High Representative and the Minister addressed the strong and mutually beneficial EU-Canada bilateral relationship building on the EU-Canada Strategic Partnership Agreement, large parts of which have been provisionally applied since April 2017. They decided that the next EU-Canada Joint Ministerial Committee would be held in Canada in the autumn.

High Representative Mogherini and Minister Freeland discussed the benefits of multilateralism and confirmed their determination to preserve the rules-based global order. The EU is working very closely with the many other like-minded countries, such as Canada, that want to strengthen the UN system and the World Trade Organisation.

As partners for peace and security on the global stage, the High Representative and the Minister also took the opportunity to exchange views on pressing foreign policy issues, namely the ongoing work to preserve the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA), the need for full implementation of the Minsk agreements, and the situation in Myanmar.

Federica Mogherini and Chrystia Freeland reviewed preparations for the Women's Foreign Ministers meeting, which they are going to co-chair on 21-22 September 2018 in Canada. The meeting will be a unique opportunity for Women Foreign Ministers from around the world to focus on a number of pressing global issues, share experience, and build on each other's successes in advancing women's participation and leadership.
