EU Promotes Debate on Global Climate Cooperation Ahead of COP30

A conference held during the FAAP Academic Week in São Paulo highlighted the role of indigenous youth and traditional knowledge in addressing global challenges

São Paulo, 14 May 2025 – As part of the lead-up to COP30, the European Union brought together around 250 university students, young indigenous leaders, journalists and experts at the Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado (FAAP) for a conference titled “Climate Justice and Global Cooperation: Brazil and the European Union on the Road to COP30'.

Marian Schuegraf, the Ambassador of the European Union to Brazil, opened the event by emphasising the importance of amplifying indigenous voices and highlighting Brazil’s strategic role in global climate action.

'Brazil is a natural ally for Europe — its environmental expertise, clean energy matrix, and industrial potential make it central to building a more sustainable future,' the Ambassador stated.

Following the opening remarks, there was an inspiring discussion with indigenous young leaders Alice Pataxó and Beka Munduruku, journalist Eliane Brum, and fashion designer Maurício Duarte taking part. The panel explored how indigenous knowledge, art, fashion and communication can promote climate resilience and encourage global cooperation.

Alice Pataxó shared a message of hope and determination:

We must think with hope, create solutions, and implement them — whether in our own communities or in broader spaces. People are looking to us — to traditional peoples — and finding solutions with us. I must believe that the world will persevere and that my territory will be safeguarded by this collective strength.”

The dialogue reaffirmed Brazil and the European Union's shared commitment to inclusive, forward-looking climate solutions ahead of COP30.
