Ecuador: Statement by the Spokesperson on the parliamentary and presidential elections

09.02.2021
Brussels

The European Union commends all parties in Ecuador who contributed to the peaceful and orderly vote for the parliamentary and presidential elections that took place on Sunday 7 February 2021.

The people of Ecuador’s commitment to their democratic rights was notably reflected in the high voter turnout, despite the challenges posed by the sanitary crisis. We expect this peaceful environment to prevail until the end of the electoral process.

The EU is a long-term partner of Ecuador and will continue to support its democratic institutions, the strengthening of the rule of law, human rights and its economic and social development. Our relations have intensified with the entry into force of the Trade Agreement in 2017, in addition to many other areas of cooperation including on multilateral fora.
