This event was part of a project designed by DG TRADE, and financed by the Partnership Instrument, meant to support the development of fair and ethical trade between the EU and Brazil. Indeed, this project was conceived to put into practice the line given in the strategy paper "Trade for All", where the need to promote fair trade schemes and to approach producers and consumers of these products are clearly stated. As the document says " The Commission has a role to play in facilitating this connection and in raising awareness on both the supply and the demand sides".
The forum gathered more than 160 participants from Brazil and Europe, including policy makers, municipalities, fair trade certifying institutions, producers, exporters, importers, fair trade schemes and organisations.
Claudia Gintersdorfer, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Brazil, opened the meeting along with the National Secretary for Solidary Economy, Natalino Oldakoski and the Undersecretary for development of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro, Epitácio Brunet. It was closed by Nicola Ardito, Head of the Trade section in the Delegation.
The morning agenda consisted of presentations around three main topics: the global picture for fair and ethical trade and the international certification process, the national strategy in Brazil and business opportunities in the EU.
In the afternoon session, four workshops on concrete topics were organised: Engaging in Fairtrade in Brazil, Certification and Legal Requirements, Engagement with International Organisations and Fairtrade Fashion strategies to export to the EU.
The forum, first of its kind, was warmly appreciated by participants.
The next steps in the implementation of the project are the elaboration on an in-depth study on fair and equitable trade in Brazil and the organisation of a second forum in December 2018.
