EPA Workshop in Lobatse – Opportunities for Botswana

Business Botswana organised a series of workshops around the country, to raise awareness of the EU-SADC Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA). Financed by the EU, under the Private Sector Development program, the first took place in Selebi Phikwe on 21 March 2017 and further workshops were held in Palapye on 23 March and Ghanzi on 19 April. The concluding event took place in Lobatse on 21 April, in the presence of Ambassador Baum and senior officials from the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry.

Representatives from several economic sectors were present at the workshops, in particular from the agro-processing, textile and engineering sectors and interest was shown in the future possibilities offered by the EU market. The EPA provides guaranteed access to the EU, the world's biggest market of over 500 million consumers and will be critical in underpinning Botswana's export-led growth and economic diversification.

Particular focus was given to the Rules of Origin contained in the EPA and how they might support the development of regional value chains through cumulation.

Full details of the Agreement and the potential benefits can be found on the European Commission's website and EU's Export Helpdesk listed under Related Links.
