Address by the Head of EU Delegation and EU Special Representative in BiH on the occassion of the Europe Day
Sarajevo’s Eternal Flame symbolizes the sacrifices made to liberate Europe from fascism. I pass this monument often on my way to Europe House, which stands just behind it.
Each time I pass, I’m reminded that the European Union is not just a system of institutions and treaties. It is, above all, an idea — a response to the horrors of fascism and war with unity, cooperation, and peace, articulated by Robert Schuman on 9 May 1950.
We celebrate this vision on Europe Day.
People lie at the heart of this vision – improving their lives through greater safety and security and giving them and their families greater opportunities.
Europe Day honours our progress, but also calls on us to complete the project of Europe’s founders through enlargement.
Bosnia and Herzegovina is undeniably European — not just geographically in the heart of Europe, but also culturally and historically. Yet today, the EU path is obstructed by a deep political and constitutional crisis.
The EU path remains the most effective framework for ensuring stability, prosperity, and reconciliation. It is also the best foundation to address complex, sensitive, and long-standing issues.
Many in Bosnia and Herzegovina are already taking advantage of the opportunities offered through diverse EU projects and programmes. Political actors can multiply these opportunities by making progress on the EU path.
The vision of a united Europe is precious, and more necessary than ever. Let’s continue working together to make it a reality!
Sretan Dan Evrope!
