Benin: Statement by the Spokesperson on the political situation
Benin is preparing to open an important chapter with the upcoming presidential elections to be held on 11 April.
As this date approaches, however, the political climate remains tense. The European Union calls on all political, institutional and civil society actors to prioritise dialogue, reject all violence and respect the legal rules and the fundamental freedoms. In this regard, it reaffirms its commitment to the right of all persons to a fair trial.
The European Union shares with Benin the values of freedom, democracy, respect for human rights and the rule of law, and calls for free, transparent and peaceful elections.
