EU Ambassador H.E Rensje Teerink visited EU funded children's rights project in Dhaka

On the occasion of the 30th Anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the most widely ratified human rights treaty in history, Ambassador Rensje Teerink, Head of Delegation of the European Union to Bangladesh visited a European Union funded project titled Protection of Children Affected by Internal Migration in Dhaka City at Babu Bazar Area in the Old Dhaka. The project is implemented by UNICEF Bangladesh with support from Aparajeyo-Bangladesh, a national child rights organization.

Ambassador Teerink visited the shelter home being operated under the project, and listened to the children's stories on positive changes they have experienced from their new life at the shelter.

A total of 54 children, aged between 6 – 18 years, are currently staying in the shelter home at Babu Bazar. These children had been detached from their families and became homeless. Aparajeyo-Bangladesh is providing the needed support to these children with an aim to integrate them to their own families or to rehabilitate those whose families cannot be traced to the Government run shelters.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child strives to ensure better implementation of children's rights worldwide. It has inspired the EU and its member states to change laws, policies and practices aimed at protecting and promoting children’s rights, irrespective of their nationality or residence status.
