Title

Health and Nutrition Voucher Scheme for Poor, Extreme Poor and Socially Excluded People (PEPSEP)

More than 60% of the total health expenditure in Bangladesh is financed by the out of pocket expenditure from individuals. The rapid urbanisation of the country has further aggravated the situation for the urban poor. As a result, these poorer segment of the population often faces catastrophic financial burden or deteriorating health conditions. The action will support activities towards increasing coverage, improving comprehensiveness, quality and sustainability of the existing health services in the two project locations Savar and Satkhira. With the help of a Health Voucher Scheme, the project aims to support access of the extreme poor to a free essential service package of quality primary health, nutrition and population service through the engagement of private service providers.

Objectives

Outcome (Specific Objectives) and Outputs (Expected results)

 

The overall objective of the project is to improve the health and nutrition status of the extreme poor by increasing accessibility, coverage, comprehensiveness and sustainability of existing primary health and nutrition services in urban Bangladesh.

The specific objectives of this Action is to establish a system of sustainable primary health care and nutrition voucher scheme  for the urban poor; and increase access and utilization of comprehensive primary health and nutrition care services for the poorest population at two Municipality areas.

 

The Action has two expected outcomes inter-linked:

  • System established for sustainable primary health care and nutrition voucher scheme  approach for the urban poor at Savar and Satkhira Municipality;
  • Increased access and utilization of comprehensive primary health and nutrition care services of 6417 urban poor Households of Savar and Satkhira Municipality (4,219 in Savar and 2,198 in Satkhira).
