Objectives

The overall objective of this initiative is to strengthen democratic ownership and improve accountability mechanisms in Bangladesh.

The specific objective is to promote a more enabling environment for the effective engagement and participation of the citizen and civil society in decision making and accountability mechanisms.

This will be achieved through both interventions with the Government of Bangladesh, and with civil society in its broadest sense, to create a framework for standards and rules of engagement that will enable more effective governance.

Target group(s)

Civil society, Ministries and Local Government

Final Beneficiaries

CBOs, women forums, citizens' associations, NGOs, (e.g. development, advocacy, watchdogs) and their structures/networks, the media and professional organisations as well as more fluid forms of civil society, such as movements.

Civil society will be primarily engaged at the local level of rural government (Union Parishad level where the democratic process starts, at Upazila level where civil society can interact with both administration and political leaders), and possibly district and central levels where CSOs can also closely engage, influence and monitor decision makers to ensure sustained change.

Cabinet Division, MOPA, Local Government Division, The Upazila Parishad (sub-district council, UPZP) and the Union Parishad (union council, UP)
