Statement by High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini on the passing of Yukiya Amano

It is with deepest sadness that I have received today the news of the passing away of the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Ambassador Yukiya Amano. This is a great loss for the Agency and for the international community.

Throughout his tenure as Director General Ambassador Amano has been serving the IAEA and its Member States with unwavering dedication and commitment. Under his leadership the Agency delivered concrete results to achieve the objective of “Atoms for Peace, Atoms for Development”. We highly value the Agency’s role in verifying Iran’s nuclear-related commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

The European Union will stand by the IAEA in the future and we will continue our strong support for it. On behalf of the EU, I wish to extend my deepest condolences to Ambassador Amano’s family and to the IAEA staff.
