Good food means good business: GIs as a driver of local development in Western Australia

The European Union's (EU) system of identifying food products based on origin - Geographical Indications (GIs) - is a driver of rural jobs and sustainable growth. Australia is considering extending the protection of European food and spirit product names to its own market as part of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA), currently under negotiation. Australia could also expand the GI system already in place for wine, which has delivered benefits to the Margaret River, to also cover food and spirits.

How could this work in practice? What are the benefits for consumers, producers and regions?

WHAT: A high-level panel discussion, workshop and Q&A looking at the EU's experience of GIs as a driver of jobs and growth in the Australian context.

SPEAKERS: Michael Pulch, EU Ambassador to Australia; Bruce Wilson, Director RMIT EU Centre; Rebecca Ball, CEO South West Development Commission; Paula Zito, GI expert University of Adelaide; Deborah Pett, WA Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development.

Local wine and food producers will share their GI experience in developing high-value markets.

The event is presented by the EU Delegation to Australia, the EU Centre at RMIT and South West Development Commission
