Seven projects with a total EU contribution of 60 Billion Leones (EUR 6.5 Million) will work to support Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Local Authorities (LAs) in 10 districts across Sierra Leone. Support to civil society and Local Authorities remains one of the priorities of the European Union, globally as well as here in Sierra Leone.

These seven projects will support capacities and contributions of CSOs and LAs in the governance and development processes in Sierra Leone. Focus areas of the seven selected projects include improving quality of teaching and learning (primary, junior secondary, vocational) and better access to education for children at risk of marginalisation, specifically girls; reinforcing democratic governance, improved transparency, inclusiveness and accountable decision-making, including improved participation of citizens in particular strengthening the voice of girls and women;  increasing gender equality and empowerment of women and girls in local development processes as well as in decentralised decision-making and local government; enhancing managerial, organisational and technical capacities of Sierra Leonean CSOs and Community Based Organisations (CBOs) and strengthening administrative and operational capacities of local authorities to carry out their legal mandates, including through collaborative efforts between local authorities.

When selecting the projects particular attention focused on ensuring that all actions proposed are in line with government policies and joint monitoring by EU and National Administration representatives will be conducted during the implementation phase.  The projects partners (FONDAZIONE AVSL, Trocaire, Health Limited, Action Aid Int. Sierra Leone, APT ACTION ON POVERTY, Port Loko District Council and Bo district Council) were selected through a competitive process and activities will be carried out throughout the country.
