The European Union will stress the importance of maintaining global commitment to the landmark Paris Agreement by screening the Guardians of the Earth film in Canberra and Melbourne as part of the EU Climate Diplomacy week which starts today.

The film has a very strong message on the need to limit the average rise of global temperatures to well below 2 degrees and pursue efforts to limit temperature rise to 1.5 degrees. The film, funded by the EU, Austria and Germany, will be a centrepiece of the EU's Climate Diplomacy week in Australia. The film screenings will be followed by panel discussions with Australian stakeholders and also include the film-maker, Filip Malinowski, and a senior German climate policy practitioner, Ursula Hutfilter. Both Mr Malinowski and Dr Hutfilter will participate in separate seminars in Canberra and Melbourne on 12 and 13 June.

The EU's Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, Miguel Arias Cañete, said 2018 was a crucial year for turning the Paris Agreement into action.

"The EU is stepping up its efforts to reach out to countries and stakeholders all around the world," the Commissioner said. "We are determined to continue playing a leading role in delivering on the promises of the Paris Agreement – and we want everybody on board."

The EU Ambassador to Australia, Michael Pulch, said the film underlined the need for global action.

"All nations, including Australia, need to work together and help finalise the Paris Agreement at the next UN climate conference (COP24) in December in Katowice, Poland," the Ambassador said.

"The EU's commitment to climate and security issues will be addressed at a high-level event to be held in Brussels on 22 June at the initiative of Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs."

The events are part of the global Talanoa Dialogue process to help review progress towards the global goals of the Paris Agreement ahead of COP24
