On Tuesday, 14 November, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and the President of the European Council Donald Tusk met in Manila to discuss the common political and trade agenda. Both sides reflected on the strong foundations of EU-New Zealand relations based on shared values, principles, history, and a commitment to the rules-based international architecture. President Tusk stated that despite the geographic distance, New Zealand is a highly valued and close partner of the EU. He congratulated PM Ardern on her nomination and looked forward to working together for even stronger EU-NZ relations. The bilateral meeting was held in the margins of the annual strategic forum for cooperation in the Asia Pacific region, the EAS Summit, where the EU was represented for the first time, and the ASEAN-EU Commemorative Summit that was marking the 40th anniversary of the establishment of ASEAN-EU Dialogue Relations.
