The EU and NATO share 22 member states – so their agendas on security and defence are naturally broadly aligned. In their first meeting in their respective new capacities, EU High Representative Mogherini and NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg agreed to continue the good cooperation between both organisations.

Speaking at a press conference after the meeting, HR/VP Mogherini said: "We have a common challenge in front of us: a security environment that is more worrying every day. Cooperation among us should improve. This is the only way of having effective military capabilities on the ground."

Both agreed to meet regularly in Brussels. HR/VP Mogherini invited the NATO Secretary General to take part in the next Foreign Affairs Council, the meeting of EU Foreign Ministers, in Brussels on 18 November and agreed to take part in the next NATO Ministerial in December.

The meeting was also an opportunity to exchange views on some of the most important issues on the agenda for security and defence policy. On Ukraine and Russia, both shared the need for a firm and strong reaction, while keeping an open channel for dialogue to pursue a political solution in Ukraine. They also discussed issues related to the Middle East and the Mediterranean; in particular Syria, Iraq and Libya as well as the situation in the Western Balkans where both NATO and the EU are engaged.
