The European Union Delegation to Australia has partnered with the Human Rights Arts & Film Festival in 2017 to underline its unwavering support on human rights and its commitment to cultural relations.
The EU's Ambassador to Australia, Sem Fabrizi, said the EU was proud to stand by creative film makers, artists and personalities who keep human rights at the heart of conversations in Australia.
"The European Union is fully committed to the promotion and protection of human rights in line with our international obligations" he said. "The power of movies and more generally art plays an important role in shaping the awareness of the large public on the crucial importance of human rights. We are happy to partner with this important film festival".
HRAFF Programme Director, Lauren Valmadre welcomed the EU's involvement in the 10th Anniversary of the Human Rights Arts & Film Festival.
"We have been delighted to forge this inaugural partnership with the European Union in Australia to further discussion on human rights through film and art," Ms Valmadre said.
The organisers of HRAFF have chosen the film, Café Waldluft, to bring a European contribution to the festival and to mark the EU Delegation's support. This movie screened in Melbourne on 13 May, and will also be shown in Canberra on 30 May.
The film tells the story of the Café Waldluft which is not what it used to be. Once a popular tourist destination, nestled in the picturesque mountain town of Berchtesgaden, Flora Kurz’s rustic hotel today exclusively welcomes refugees from across the globe. For each inhabitant, her hotel offers the hope of a new beginning, the aspiration of a new home – but with the myriad emotional and bureaucratic obstacles in their way. This heartfelt documentary takes an intimate look at the intersecting lives of the refugee residents, tourists and locals. Café Waldluft offers an important vision of empathy in the ongoing refugee crisis.
