We are

The European Union (EU) is an economic and political partnership between 28 European countries. It plays an important role in international affairs through diplomacy, trade, development aid and working with global organisations. Abroad, the EU is represented through more than 140 diplomatic representations, known also as EU Delegations, which have a similar function to those of an embassy.

The EU Delegation to Ethiopia ensures:

  • the tasks of the EU Presidency in this host country;
  • the representation of the European Union to Ethiopia;
  • the follow-up of bilateral relations in the areas of political, economic, trade and external assistance cooperation (financial & technical);
  • the follow-up of EU policies in other sectors;
  • the follow-up of EU policies to identify opportunities for synergies and/or in-coherences between such policies and poverty reduction in line with policy coherence for development (Art 208 TFEU);
  • promotes  and defends the values and interests of the EU;
  • coordinates the work of the Member States’ Embassies, particularly in the fields of EU competences, notably trade and external assistance;
  • carries out CFSP (Common Foreign Security Policy) demarches as appropriate; reports to Headquarters on all matters of interest for EU policies;
  • carries out press and public diplomacy activities in pursuit of the above;
  • ensures the long-term programming of aid and the management of programmes and devolved projects within the framework of the current reform of External Aid Management;
  • ensures implementation of the Communication on a stronger Partnership to deliver Market Access by means of market access teams;
  • ensures the follow-up of EU policies in all sectors in particular the Communication on a stronger partnership to deliver Market Access by means of market access teams; provides any necessary support for visits by Members of the EEAS, Commission, Council and Parliament.

We offer

We offer a Driver post in the Administration Section. Under this post the recruited person will be attributed functions depending on the needs of the Delegation. Upon recruitment, the successful candidate will occupy the specific job function as Driver – this job function may be changed in accordance with the needs of the Delegation. Under this job function the successful candidate will serve as technical and support staff to provide reliable and safe driving services for staff and visitors; delivery and collection of mail, documents and other items; drives EU personnel to project sites including official site visits in and outside of Addis Ababa; ensures vehicle is kept in good running condition at all times through addressing minor repairs, making arrangements for major repairs, timely change of oil, check of tires, brakes, water levels and car washing; meeting official personnel and visitors at the Airport; assist staff in loading and unloading items as mail supplies and other equipment, performs any other duties as may be assigned by the Head of Administration or Head of Delegation.

Place of Employment:  Delegation of the EU to Ethiopia - Addis Ababa

Employment Contract : Indefinite

Working hours/week: 37.5

Group: V - with starting basic salary of 696 EUR/month (payable equivalent in Ethiopian Birr)

Selection Criteria

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Medically fit to perform the required duties;
  2. Enjoys civil rights and permits for employment under local law;
  3. The candidate must possess a certificate of completion Secondary School and a minimum of 3rd grade valid Ethiopian Driving License;
  4. Microsoft office basic
  5. Minimum of 5 years of passenger vehicle driving experience with manual and automatic transmissions;
  6. Ability to understand, read, speak and write English.
  7. Excellent references

The following will be considered an asset:

  1. Certificate/diploma in Auto Mechanics
  2. Basic knowledge of IT tools
  3. Work Experience in International organizations or NGO

The procedure

After the deadline for applications, the applications will be reviewed by a Selection Committee set up for this purpose. The Selection Committee will prepare a short-list of candidates who are considered to be the most suitable for the post on the basis of a preliminary assessment of the information provided in their application letter and the supporting documents. The short-listed candidates will be invited to an assessment phase which will include a written test and an interview – during this phase, the selection Committee will assess the suitability of the candidates for the post. The driving test will examine driving knowledge. A contract may be concluded with a chosen candidate under the condition that she or he is medically fit to perform the required duties.  The medical exam will be done at the clinic chosen by the Delegation.

The candidates who have not been short-listed will not be contacted individually. However, the Delegation will use the same means of publication as for this Vacancy Notice to inform the remaining candidates once the recruitment procedure has been completed and that a candidate has (or has not) been recruited.
