Statement by the Spokesperson on the recent events in Afghanistan and the attacks against civilians

Text

Afghanistan and its people are once again victims of violence that over the past days has claimed many lives, particularly civilian.

The humanitarian situation and level of civilian casualties following the Taliban's attack on Ghazni city have brought even greater hardship on the Afghan people, with deliberate killings of civilians, destruction, burning and looting of public property.

The attack against an educational institution, the Mawood Academy in Kabul, on 15 August, is an attack on the youth of the country and its future. Schools are a place of study - they must be preserved from any violence and cannot be the target of attacks.

The EU once again calls on all sides of the conflict to avoid targeting civilians, extends its condolences to the families of the victims and wishes speedy recovery to those injured. We stand by the people of Afghanistan in line with the EU's commitment to promote peace, stability and prosperity of the country and support the efforts of the Afghan National Security Forces to this end.

The Ghazni situation and the indiscriminate attacks against civilians are again a tragic illustration that the conflict is in no party's interest and should rather encourage all sides to engage in a peace process. A negotiated cease fire at the time of Eid el-Adha is what all Afghans desperately expect.
