As regards the situation on the Korean Peninsula, the High Representative reiterated the European Union's continued policy combining strong pressure through sanctions implementation with full support for the ongoing diplomatic processes aimed at complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation as well as peace and reconciliation. She also reiterated the EU's committment to the continued full and effective implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA); the need to respect the principles of international law when it comes to maritime security, as enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea; and the European Union's full mobilisation to address the Rohingya refugee crisis.
High Representative/Vice-President Mogherini had a number of bilateral meetings in the margins of the ASEAN Regional Forum. With the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada Chrystia Freeland and Foreign Minister of Indonesia, Retno Marsudi, Mogherini discussed foreign policy priorities such as the Middle East Peace Process, the Rohingya refugee crisis and the JCPOA. They also looked forward to the Women Foreign Ministers' Meeting, to be co-chaired by Federica Mogherini and Chrystia Freeland in Montreal on 21-22 September.
In her meeting with the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, Abul Hassan Mahmood, High Representative Mogherini stressed the European Union's appreciation for Bangladesh's continued hosting of hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees. The European Commission released just over two months ago an additional €40 million in humanitarian aid to provide life-saving support, adding to the €51 million mobilised in 2017. They also discussed the comprehensive bilateral agenda.
The High Representative had a first meeting with the Foreign Minister of Timor Leste, Dionisio Babo Soares. Federica Mogherini stressed the EU's commitment to positive and strong relations with Timor Leste and the Pacific region as a whole. They also discussed prospects for the joint use of natural resources in the Timor Sea following the conclusion of a maritime boundary treaty with Australia.
Federica Mogherini expressed her condolences to Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith, the government and people of Lao PDR for the lives lost in the fracturing of the Xe Namnoy dam and for those displaced by the flooding. The European Commission earlier this week mobilised €200,000 in emergency relief. They discussed bilateral relations including the sustainable development agenda, human rights and reforms.
