On 17 June 2020 at 18:00 an open online lecture “The memory of the Gulag in modern France: peripheral or pan-European history?” will be held by Luba Jurgenson, author and translator. The event is organized as a part of event series “Over the Barriers. Europe without Borders”. It is a joint project of the International Memorial and the EU Delegation to Russia.
Interest in Soviet history and Gulag-related topics has recently increased in France. The success of “Gulag. The story” movie by Patrick Rothman, Nicolas Werth and Francois Aime, and “Stalin's executioners. The Katyn massacre” documentary by Cedric Tourbe, as well as an exhibition about Gulag, lately held in Grenoble, showed that the repressions of the Soviet era still affect the public. However in the western consciousness Gulag is still perceived as a peripheral phenomenon in relation to the Pan-European history. Luba Jurgenson will tell about reasons of such perception and about its transformation during the last time.
