On Europe Day 2019, EU Delegation hails 'significantly deepening relations with Nigeria, showcases initiatives on renewable energy

At the EU Delegation in Nigeria and ECOWAS, we have adopted what the Head of Delegation, Ambassador Ketil Karlsen, likes to call 'a small tradition' of making the EU celebrations in Nigeria a little different. Each year, the EU uses the occasion of Europe Day to highlight - and make a case for- an aspect of its partnership with its host country. To reflect the diversity of this EU-Nigeria engagement, we opted to showcase this year the importance of access to affordable and clean energy. It is in recognition of the potential of renewables in Nigeria’s gloomy energy sector, a sector that fundamentally determines development opportunities in in the country, and the outstanding attention it is receiving from the EU.
Speaking at a well-attended reception in Abuja, Ambassador Karlsen hailed the 'significantly deepening relations between the EU and Nigeria.'
Underscoring the multi-faceted nature of the EU-Nigeria relations, Ambassador Karlsen noted that choosing an aspect to spotlight on this occasion was by no means easy, but said "all of these and other matters should not compete for importance as they are all part of one greater, integrated approach reflecting the importance given to Africa's greatest nation by the EU."
The event was attended by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Governors Godwin Obaseki and Abubakar Bello of Edo and Niger states respectively, the Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu, several other top political, business and religious leaders as well as the diplomatic community.
