Access to Renewable and Efficient Energy in Municipalities Vayk and Spitak (AREEM) Project

31/05/2018 - 10:21

Energy consumption for space heating in public, commercial and residential buildings accounts for more than 30% of the total energy consumption in most countries of the region, as previous construction and heating methods did not focus on energy efficiency.

As a result, inefficient energy use intensifies the impact of rising energy prices on households or public institutions. The majority of Armenia’s housing stock, especially in urban areas, consists of pre-fabricated multi-story apartment buildings that are generally of poor construction, badly insulated and maintained and as a result provide a low level of energy efficiency and living comfort.

The residential and public buildings in Vayk and Spitak towns do not meet the energy efficiency current standards. As members of the Covenant of Mayors (CoM) these towns have adopted a commitment to reduce the CO2 emissions of at least 20% by 2020 through the implementation of Sustainable Energy Action Plans (SEAPs).

This project comes to support the municipalities of Spitak and Vayk to develop and test replicable and efficient model(s) of energy savings through use of effective measures and renewable sources in residential and public buildings, incorporated with their Community Development Plans/or SEAPs within the CoM requirements.

Actions in Brief:

Within AREEM project, energy saving and efficient measures (roofs, doors and windows and/or insulation of building envelope, etc.) will be implemented in 45 residential buildings in Vayk (18 buildings) and Spitak (27 buildings) and 2 public buildings (House of Culture in Vayk, Kindergarten N2 in Spitak). The mentioned activities in the residential buildings will entail at least 20% energy saving and improvement of comfort level of the residents.

Regular knowledge sharing forums to be organised for the residents of the targeted buildings and municipalities’ staff will change their behavior and attitude towards energy consumption, and will raise public awareness on energy saving, energy efficiency and renewable energy.

The municipal staff in Vayk and Spitak to be trained on the implementation of sustainable energy projects in order to ensure the sustainability of this Project.

Installation of photovoltaic (PV) solar panels will generate electricity for 8 public consumers, while the lighting of entrances, staircases and courtyards of the selected residential buildings will be upgraded.
