Waste management is an unsolved problem in most of communities of Armenia. In many rural settlements waste management is not being carried out at all. This is why one can came across dismal sceneries full of scattered litter - mostly plastic bags and bottles -  over the fields and gorges, in the riverbeds and along roads. There is a unanimous understanding among local authorities, CSOs and environmental activists that in order to change the situation, a strategic approach has to be applied to address waste management issue in two of the recently consolidated communities of Syunik  region – Goris and Gorayq.

‘Strategic’ is a key word in the project designed by the Urban Foundation: It means thorough planning of logistics and operations of the services, obtaining necessary equipment and carrying out targeted awareness raising among population.  First of all, the project assists authorities of target communities to develop waste management strategies in a way that the service covers all settlements and is as effective and efficient as possible. That is why, the project introduces separation of plastic waste from general garbage, baling and storing. What happens next? Have a look at the next project – ' TURNING ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES INTO OPPORTUNITIES: Introducing Construction Materials From Plastic Waste ' underway in Syunik.  The two EU funded projects have strong synergies and loop the circle form separating plastic to its recycling.

Actions in Brief

The project team believes in the slogan ‘A clean place is not the one which is cleaned, but the one which is not littered’. That is why special public education activities are designed for different publics. For example, women learn how everyday household practices can be made more environmentally friendly, schoolchildren understand why it is important to separate waste and why plastic must not be burned; local authorities become aware of environmental management systems.

As for equipment, two garbage trucks and hundreds of bins for general garbage and containers for plastic waste are being purchased.
