The key priority of regional development in Armenia is the increase of employment through creation of quality and high productivity jobs.

Surveys  conducted by the Government and the World Bank show that about 29.4% of Armenia’s population lives below poverty line. Rural people are particularly vulnerable. The Project focuses on job creation within agricultural and agro processing sectors, as employment in agriculture and agribusiness comprises over 80% of total rural employment in beneficiary communities.

Surveys[1] conducted by the Government and the World Bank show that about 29.4% of Armenia’s population lives below poverty line. Rural people are particularly vulnerable. The Project focuses on job creation within agricultural and agro processing sectors, as employment in agriculture and agribusiness comprises over 80% of total rural employment in beneficiary communities.

The project partner is Shen NGO in cooperation with 6 partners from Gegharkunik and Syunik Marzes (regions) of Armenia. The project activities contribute to local economic growth in beneficiary communities by increasing regional competitiveness and creating sustainable jobs. Beneficiary cooperatives will create 23 quality and 74 regular jobs.

Actions in Brief

The Project will provide institutional and technical assistance to establish three new and to strengthen 3 existing agricultural cooperatives. Members and management of beneficiary cooperatives will be trained in principles and legal regulation of cooperatives, marketing and business skills development, modern methods for primary agricultural production, processing of agricultural products, production and use of biogas.

The project will finance the establishment of processing and production units in beneficiary communities. One spelt mill, one grain refining and winnowing unit, one flaxseed oil production unit, and three drying units for wild harvested herbs and berries will be founded in Syunik. One drying unit and three greenhouses will be established in Gegharkunik.

Milking stations will be constructed in 3 villages of Syunik marz. Irrigation systems in Shaki and Angeghakot villages will be renovated. Three deep wells will be reconstructed in beneficiary communities of Gegharkunik. About 400 ha land will be irrigated. Cooperatives will be provided with modern agricultural machinery to increase productivity and efficiency. 

Small scale biogas plants will be established in five communities in Syunik and Gegharkunik. One large-scale biogas plant, already established by United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), will be reconstructed.
