The European Union works closely with the numerous United Nations bodies to promote international peace, human rights and development.

The EU Delegation to the United Nations in New York coordinates with the 28 EU countries to ensure they speak with one voice.

The Delegation enjoys enhanced observer status at the UN. This allows the EU to present common positions, make interventions, present proposals and participate in the UN’s general debate every September.

The EU also works closely with the UN Secretariat and its agencies, funds and programmes on a range of global issues, including:

  • sustainable development
  • human rights
  • climate change
  • peace building & conflict prevention
  • humanitarian assistance.

Together the EU and its member countries provide the UN with 30 % of its regular budget and 33 % of its peacekeeping budget. Collectively, they are the UN’s largest financial contributor.

Setting priorities

Each summer, the EU adopts its Priorities for the UN General Assembly, which guides the Delegation’s work for the coming year.

During the 71st UN General Assembly, Heads of State agreed on the new 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which seeks to eradicate poverty. The EU is mobilising its resources to help put the 2030 agenda into practice.

For the 72nd UN General Assembly (September 2017 to September 2018), the EU aims to reinvigorate multilateralism by supporting a strong UN as the bedrock of the rules-based global order. Multilateralism is one of the core principles and priorities in the new EU Global Strategy for Foreign and Security Policy.

Work during this period will focus on three interlinked and mutually reinforcing priority areas: stronger global governance; peace and conflict prevention; and an enduring agenda for transformation (see below for further details).
