Basic Education Support towards Transition Phase II

Providing a quality basic education for students in the nine refugee camps along the Myanmar border and improve preparedness in the education sector for sustainable voluntary return.

The project has had impacts on ensuring the delivery of quality education in the refugee camps. The project is making the effort to meet beneficiaries’ needs including vulnerable groups such as those with disabilities and out-of-school children, and ensure that children are able to pursue other educational opportunities/livelihoods upon completion of camp education. In June 2016 74.3% of school age children in the seven Karen camps accessed education compared to 71% in 2014. In addition, 447 previously out-of-school was re-enrolled in 2016 school year as compared to 257 as in 2014 school year. The project's strength is its continual effort in maintaining availability of trained teachers and basic education services and improving teaching quality. As a result, education staff and teachers have improved attitude towards teaching and learning elements the project introduced, this project demonstrates that capacity building, strengthening and empowering local communities are key in addressing and promoting education in refugee camps.
