Team Europe delivers first Covax vaccines to Angola

02.03.2021

A stock of 624.000 AstraZeneca vaccines arrived at the Luanda International Airport today. The vaccines are part of the 2.1 million doses that COVAX expects to deliver to Angola until May.

The EU and its Member States, known as Team Europe, is one of the main contributors to COVAX, with more than € 2.2 billion.

Team Europe, that is, the European Union and its Member States, was represented at the vaccine reception ceremony, held at the International Airport, by the Chargé d'Affaires of the European Union Delegation, Joana Mizarela, who accompanied the Minister of Health and the Governor of Luanda. Representatives of the OMS, UNICEF, CDC and the Indian Ambassador were also present.

Global vaccination is a decisive step towards the eradication of the Covid-19 pandemic. The EU and its Member States support the great effort that the Government of Angola is making to control and mitigate the impact of covid-19 in Angola, with satisfactory results. In this regard, the EU provided budget support of 20 million euros to support Angola's efforts to combat the pandemic, including donation of biosafety materials.

COVAX is the vaccines pillar of the Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator, a global collaboration to accelerate the development, production, and equitable access to COVID-19 tests, treatments, and vaccines.

The global COVAX initiative aims to buy 2 billion doses by the end of 2021, including at least 1.3 billion doses for low- and middle-income countries, such as Angola.
