High Representative/Vice President Federica Mogherini meets the President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame

Today the High Representative/Vice President Federica Mogherini met President  Paul Kagame of Rwanda, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Louise Mushikiwabo, and Uzziel Ndagijimana, Minister of Finance and Economic planning, who are attending the 2018 European Development Days. 

The importance of the strategic partnership between the African Union (AU) and the EU was discussed, as President Kagame currently holds the chair of the African Union. The High Representative underlined the excellent cooperation between the two Unions and welcomed the historic steps towards closer integration taken by the African Union recently, such as the African Continental Free Trade agreement. She confirmed the EU’s readiness to continue supporting African Union's projects and reforms.

The situation in the Great Lakes region, notably in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and Central African Republic, was also on the agenda. The High Representative/Vice President Federica Mogherini underlined the EU's commitment to work together with partners such as the AU, the UN as well as regional organisations and countries of the region to find peaceful political solutions. In that context, the High Representative/Vice President Federica Mogherini also welcomed Rwanda's contribution to UN peacekeepingmissions.

They also exchanged views on the situation in Rwanda and on all issues of relevance to the two parties, including on the upcoming parliamentary elections as well as the positive economic and social progress of the country.
