Briefing for EU and AU Ambassadors on the Joint AU/EU/UN Task Force for Libya
05/03/2018 - 00:00
A briefing was organised on March 5th by the EU Delegation to the African Union and the African Union Commission for AU and EU Ambassadors in Addis Ababa on the progress of the AU/EU/UN Joint Task Force for Libya.
The session was chaired by Amira El Fadil (AU Commissioner for Social Affairs), with the participation of Christian Leffler (Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service), Othman Belbeisi (Chief of Mission of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Libya), and Cosmas Chanda (Representative of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to the African Union).
The Task Force was launched in November 2017 at the 5th AU-EU Summit, in an effort to alleviate the struggle of migrants stranded in Libya. It has since achieved its target of voluntarily assisting 15,000 migrants to return to their countries of origin. The briefing session highlighted the need to ensure their full reintegration, and for detention centres to be closed down. The Task Force can also serve as an inspiration for successful trilateral AU-EU-UN cooperation in other contexts.
