High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini met today with Secretary General of Amnesty International, Salil Shetty, who is on his visit to Brussels.
At the meeting the High Representative confirmed the unwavering commitment of the European Union to promote and defend Human Rights throughout the world, as illustrated by a new and ambitious Action Plan on Human Rights and Democracy, due to be adopted by the Council in the coming weeks. The 2014 Annual Report on Human Rights and Democracy, to be published on 22 June, will also set out the extensive international action of the EU in this field.
"Civil society and international advocacy organisations such as Amnesty International are fundamental partners to the EU in its global endeavour to promote and protect human rights," said Federica Mogherini. In this respect, the High Representative and the Secretary General agreed to continue co-operation, including on civil society and human rights defenders increasingly under threat in too many countries.
Federica Mogherini and Salil Shetty discussed a number of other topics of common interest, including addressing the migration challenges.
