She is now benefiting from the project called "Building Resilience through Social Transfers for Nutritional Security (BReST) in The Gambia". Watch her story in the video below!

Text

The BReST project is a three-year project funded by the European Union and implemented in three regions of the country: North Bank Region (NBR), URR and CRR by UNICEF The Gambia. The rationale for the project is based on evidence that the period from pregnancy to 24 months of age of the child (first 1000 days of life) is a crucial window of opportunity for reducing malnutrition and its adverse effects in children. Furthermore, this period provides prospects to deliver information, education and skills to mothers and thus maximizes health benefits for the child, mother and the wider household.

The overall objective of the project is to improve the nutritional status of lactating women and children under 2 years in rural areas in the target regions. Consequently, the project targets lactating women with children under 2 years, giving monthly cash transfer of GMD 600 per mother-child pair. The cash is to build resilience by making additional money available for the household to diversify their food consumption, improve feeding patterns, thereby making more nutrient available in their meals.
