The announcement by the Government and the FARC on 7 March of an agreement on the clearing and decontamination of territories affected by landmines and other unexploded ordnance is a welcome and very significant step forward in efforts to de-escalate the conflict. When implemented, this will greatly improve the living conditions of people in conflict areas and open new opportunities for rural development.
The EU has already provided assistance for several years to Colombia with a view to helping the country overcome the consequences of the conflict, including in the area of demining.
The EU strongly supports the Havana negotiations, which offer a unique opportunity to put an end to decades of human suffering and, if concluded, will create the right conditions to build a more peaceful and socially inclusive Colombia.
