The European Union (EU) is founded on the principles of liberty, democracy, respect for human rights and the rule of law. Human Rights and democracy are important areas of EU co-operation and support, and activities in this sector are provided through a number of EC instruments.

EIDHR aims to contribute to the development and consolidation of democracy, the Rule of Law, and respect for all human rights and fundamental freedoms within the framework of the European Union’s policy on development cooperation with third countries, consistently with the European Union’s foreign policy as a whole.
