The Regional Meeting for Africa, the Policy Forum on Development successfully concluded in Gaborone with the participation of the EU Ambassador in Botswana, Jan Sadek and the Botswanuan Minister of Local Goverment and Rural Government who officially opened the event. More than 100 representatives of African civil society organisations, local authorities, the African Union and EU institutions met for three days to debate the most pressing development issues, the progress made on the implementation of the sustainable development goals and the 2030 Agenda as well as the EU-Africa relations.
The results of the debates will feed into the drafting of the post2020 EU-Africa, Caribbean and Pacific agreement and will further strengthen the partnership between the European Union and Africa in different key areas such as youth; peace and security, trade and migration issues.
Among the topics discussed was the challenge of corruption and the shrinking space of civil society, the question how to empower women and youth, to support private sector investment (e.g. through the European Investment Plan) and to find common solutions between Europe and Africa for questions of migration, peace and security.
