High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, Federica Mogherini, today hosted Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi in Brussels on the occasion of the signing of the new EU-Pakistan Strategic Engagement Plan.

The Strategic Engagement Plan is a new forward-looking and ambitious political framework for EU-Pakistan relations. It will further deepen relations and enhance the level of bilateral engagement, while addressing also emerging global challenges.

Traditional areas of engagement such as peace and security, democracy, the rule of law, good governance and human rights, migration and mobility, and trade and investment will remain prominent strands in the dialogue and cooperation between the EU and Pakistan. In addition, the Strategic Engagement Plan will also allow for cooperation in new and untapped areas such as energy and climate change, education, culture, science and technology, among others.

Peace and Security is a crucial part of EU-Pakistan bilateral relations and the Strategic Engagement Plan foresees the establishment of a Security Dialogue that will allow for regular, high level, action-oriented discussions and a comprehensive approach in this area. The 3rd round of the regular security and defence staff talks are also being held today in Brussels.

In her meeting with Foreign Minister Qureshi, High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini discussed the domestic political situation in Pakistan as well as the implementation of the action plan under the Financial Action Task Force.

Federica Mogherini and Minister Qureshi discussed  follow up to their commitment taken in March, on the occasion of the High Representative’s visit to Islamabad, to genuine regional peace and stability. Both the European Union and Pakistan recognise the need to seize the current and unique momentum for bringing about lasting peace in Afghanistan, High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini highlighted the clear role for Pakistan in promoting an intra-Afghan dialogue on peace and in encouraging a secure environment for the forthcoming Presidential elections. High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini also stressed the importance of re-engagement by Pakistan and India on the basis of a comprehensive partnership.
