Federica Mogherini visits Nairobi
On 21 January 2019, High Representative/Vice-President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini visited Kenya for the first time.
HR/VP Federica Mogherini inaugurated the new EU Delegation to Kenya offices. HR/VP Mogherini noted: 'It is the second largest [EU Embassy] in the world, and this is not by coincidence; it is because of our investment economically, politically and in terms of security. The cooperation we have is key for the European Union and we value Kenya's partnership and friendship enormously'.
Her visit to the new office building also included meeting Kenyan youth and civil society organisations, supported through various EU funded projects. The young Kenyan men and women explained challenges the youth is facing and opportunities available to the young Kenyans today.
Lastly, HR/VP met with the President of the Republic of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Kenya, Monica Juma and Cabinet Secretary of Interior and Coordination of National Government, Fred Matiang'i to discuss concrete elements and the common agenda for cooperation between the EU and Kenya. The discussed issues included working together on security challenges both in the Horn of Africa and globally, as well as trade and business relations.
