EUAM Iraq Acting Head of Mission Mr. Benny Jensen met yesterday with the Ministry of Interior (MoI) Spokesperson Saad Maan to discuss the current security situation related to the political developments in Iraq. The Mission expressed its deepest condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims during the violent protests. Thousands of mostly young men have been demonstrating in different parts of Iraq against corruption, unemployment and poor public services.
Spokesperson Maan briefed Mr. Jensen about the current situation and ensured that all measures have been taken to calm the protesters. He informed that an investigation was under way to determine who was behind the deadly demonstrations and violence.
The two parties also discussed the attacks against Iraqi media agencies. On 5 October during the violent demonstrations unknown assailants attacked several TV-stations countrywide, such as Al-Hadth, Dijla, NRT, Al-Arabiya, Al-Nahar and Al-Fourat. Spokesperson Maan condemned all attacks against the press and freedom of speech.
It was mutually agreed that EUAM Iraq will continue to provide strategic level advice on the security sector reform for respective MoI agencies. Next meeting with the two parties is scheduled for next week.
