New Head of Mission of EUAM Iraq takes office

EUAM Iraq is happy to announce the arrival of the new Head of Mission Christoph Buik in Baghdad. Buik, a German national, previously served as the Director of the UN Standing Police Capacity in Brindisi, Italy.

Buik will conduct several high-level meetings during his first week on the job. Today he met with the Head of EU Delegation, Ambassador Martin Huth and the Minister of Interior, Yassin al-Yasiri. 

- I’m very impressed by the professionalism of the EUAM Iraq mission members, who are working in very challenging environment. I’m looking forward to enhancing the Security Sector Reform (SSR) program in Iraq and increasing the dialogue with the relevant counterparts. I see that the Mission has an important role in supporting the stability and sovereignty of Iraq, Buik says.

Head of Mission Buik is a senior member of the German Federal Police and has more than 45 years of policing and law enforcement experience at national and international levels. His previous assignments were with the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) between 2015-2018. He has also worked for two European Union Crisis Management Missions: EU AMIS in Darfur (2006–2007) and EUCAP Nestor in Djibouti (2012–2013). Additionally, he served with the UN in 2002 working as the Police Station Commander with UNMIK in Kosovo until 2003. In 2008–2009 he returned to UN peacekeeping in Darfur with UNAMID and served one assignment with the OSCE in Kosovo: KVM (1998–1999).

The Mission wishes the new Head of Mission the very best for a successful tour of duty in Iraq.
