European Union External Action

sustainable development goals

“No country can succeed alone in reversing the worrying trends that we face in our Oceans today. For the past two years, we have shown that we will only achieve safe and sustainably managed oceans through diplomacy, common rules and international cooperation. There are many challenges ahead. For this reason, the EU will continue to pursue strong and united ocean action.” – Federica Mogherini

The goal of the Lesotho Data for Sustainable Development Project is to collect, analyse and disseminate development data about the country.

Around 8 million tons of plastic enter the sea every year... mostly ending up on our beaches... Collective action is needed! Throughout the months of September and October, leading to the Our Ocean Conference in Bali, several EU Delegations worldwide were actively cleaning seashores and riverbanks together with their families, and locals and organisations who worked jointly to make our ocean a better place for marine life... These efforts have now been marked on the European Atlas of the Seas’ last “Map of the Week” for 2018!

The European Union has pledged close to EUR 300 million to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources during its participation at the Our Ocean Conference in Bali, Indonesia. This comes on top of the EUR 550 million in commitments made by the EU in 2017, when it hosted the conference in Malta.

A #RaceToTheTop to #BeatPlasticPollution event co-hosted by the EU and the UN Environment Programme, took place on Tuesday, 25 September, during the UN General Assembly, encouraging governments around the world to follow the EU's lead and tackle this cross-border challenge. The EU is at the forefront of the global transition towards a more circular economy, transforming how products are designed, produced, used, and recycled in a way that is positive for our environment and boosts our industry's competitiveness.
