The Arctic is warming at more than twice the global average. The Mediterranean is facing decreasing precipitation and increasing temperatures. The warming of the Baltic, Black and North Seas is happening at a big pace. The situation is alarming. It is urgent to strengthen the global response to the climate emergency. High Representative Josep Borrell chaired the Foreign Affairs Council on 20 January, where Ministers discussed ways to step up climate diplomacy. The EU is determined to help raise global ambition and will use all tools at its disposal to tackle the climate challenge.

Our ocean is under threat from the effects of climate change, over-fishing, pollution and loss of biodiversity. Our future depends on a clean and healthy ocean, where protection and sustainable use go hand in hand. Safeguarding the ocean for future generations is a shared responsibility and a matter of global urgency. The EU is at the forefront of climate action. As the 2019 worldwide #EUBeachCleanUp campaign nears the end, the EU welcomes this year’s #OurOcean conference in Oslo where it announces its commitments to protect the ocean.

A combination of a growing population and climate change makes water one of the most pressing challenges the world faces in the 21st century. The EU is committed to enhancing its diplomatic engagement to make water a tool for peace, rather than a source of tension. We shall use many means at our disposal to promote and protect the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation.

Our Ocean, Our Legacy is the theme of this year's Our Ocean Conference, as it reflects our choices and actions to maintain the sustainability of our ocean's resources and to preserve our ocean's health. The conference will be taking place in Bali, Indonesia on 29-30 October.

Showing real action for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Mayors and Geneva’s Ambassadors teamed up for an exciting soccer match at the side-lines of the first Forum of Mayors at UN Geneva. The EU Delegation in Geneva together with the German EU Council Presidency and UNECE brought together two highly motivated teams – “Ambassadors United” vs “Mayors United” - with players from across the diverse UNECE region with one goal: to score the 17 SDGs.

“It’s all still in my head, where it happened, who held me down, the balcony above me. And how it was all masked by a party with gifts and music.” Mariam, born in Djibouti, recounts her traumatic experience when she was 5 years old. As a young woman she joined a movement to end female genital mutilation in her country and vowed never to do this to her own daughter. However, in Mariam’s absence, her traditionalist mother arranged to have the baby cut and some months later the child died from an infection. The EU is adamant to end this inhumane act of female genital mutilation and supports UNICEF in its educational programmes with UNFPA on women's and children's rights and health risks.

Migration is a global phenomenon driven by many forces starting with aspirations for dignity, safety and peace. The decision to leave home may be extreme, and often, the beginning of a dangerous, sometimes fatal journey. On the occasion of International Migrants Day the EU states "we stand strong in our unequivocal commitment to respect and protect the dignity, human rights and fundamental freedoms of all migrants as well as to ensure that migration takes place in a safe, orderly and well-managed way."
