On Thursday, 21 March 2019, the European Union Office to Hong Kong and Macao, in collaboration with Business Environment Council, hosted the first European Union Plastic Waste Reduction Workshop. The workshop brought together leading experts from Europe and Hong Kong to enhance cooperation and seek solutions to the problem of plastic waste.

Imagine 8 million tons of plastic… or 310.000 shipping containers filled with plastic… this is the amount of plastic being dumped into the ocean worldwide… every year. The consequences are dramatic. “Our oceans are in danger. By 2050 they could contain more plastic than fish,” EU High Representative Mogherini had announced at the #OurOcean Conference in Malta last October. The Ocean Plastics Lab is an international travelling exhibition showcasing the contribution of science to understand and combat the problem of plastics in the ocean. The exhibition is currently located at the Esplanade Solidarność 1980, at the European Parliament.

The EU is committed to environmental sustainability and to fighting climate change. In Mexico, the EU Delegation embarked on an interactive awareness-raising campaign about environmental protection which culminated with the planting of a new forest, providing a concrete example of how our commitments are translated into action.

Sustainable development means ensuring energy for growth while protecting our planet. In Tanzania, a small hydro-electric project shows how the EU's commitments translate into action on the ground.
