About the Ambassador
Message from the Ambassador
Welcome to the website of the EU Delegation to the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.
The EU is this country’s largest trade partner and investor, the largest provider of development grants and a major source of both humanitarian support and remittances.
I arrived in 2024 at a moment of unprecedented change. The EU Delegation mission has, since then, been to support this country’s reform and growth ambitions, underpinned by values dear to us both: good governance, democracy, Rule of Law and respect for fundamental rights.
We salute the February 2026 elections, the referendum on state reform, and the return of Bangladesh to the family of democracies. This success has opened the path for us to finalise the negotiation of an upgraded and comprehensive Partnership and Cooperation Agreement, scope out a more political relationship and energise a deepening and widening of the fast-evolving and dynamic EU-Bangladesh partnership.
Bangladesh has achieved substantial economic progress over the past two decades, underpinned by duty-free and quota-free access to the European Union’s market. The country is a ready-made garment powerhouse, a reflection of the industriousness and resilience of its people and the appetite of the world for its products. Millions - notably women – enjoy greater opportunity than ever before.
The next chapter in the success story of Bangladesh will be written as we work together to shape a future that is skilled, digital, green and globally connected. To help modernise and diversify the economy, the EU is promoting market opening, contract enforcement, trade facilitation and Global Gatewayinvestment - in infrastructure, in connectivity, in digitalisation and with the private sector - as a pathway to open, secure and sustainable growth. Meanwhile, EuroCham has become an established player and we are preparing a major Business Forum. We are also examining Bangladesh’s request to negotiate a Free Trade Agreement for its post-LDC future.
The world is changing in unpredictable ways. As this country’s steadfast political partner, we stand shoulder to shoulder with Bangladesh, standing up for international law and staying the course on global challenges that affect us all, including security, migration, displacement and climate change.
