The High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini addressed today the women leaders from almost 20 different countries who gathered in Brussels for the high-level meeting “The Role of Women in Peace and Transition Processes”, hosted by the European Union.
As part of the EU's engagement to support the meaningful participation of women in all aspects of peace processes, the two-day meeting provided political space for a discussion among women leaders on the role of youth and women in the fields of conflict prevention, conflict resolution, mediation, political transition processes and peace-building.
The cross-geographical, cross-organisational and cross-generational group had a long and deep exchange with Federica Mogherini to discuss common challenges, from the lack of physical protection for peace-builders and mediators to the need of more information in and easier access to funds for youth/women, peace and security initiatives.
Federica Mogherini re-emphasised the commitment of the EU to work towards a minimum of 33% women participating in all EU activities and projects related to peace processes. The EU is also ready to launch the project “Women as Actors in Peace Processes” in the MENA region, which will include coaching and mentoring activities for women leaders. Among other initiatives, the possibility of creating in EU Delegations in some countries focal points on Youth/Women, Peace and Security, to facilitate access of young and women leaders to consultation processes, and set up instruments for safety and physical protection of young and women peacebuilders will be explored.
