At the invitation of the Government of Bangladesh, the European Union established a mission to observe the parliamentary elections in Bangladesh on 12 June 1996.

These elections were won by the Bangladesh Awami League after BNP was forced to dissolve the parliament and hold impartial elections under the caretaker government.

The observers were deployed throughout the country. They met government and electoral officials, candidates and political parties, civil society representatives and the media.
