The International Fund for Agricultural Development was created in 1977 as an international specialised UN fund to mobilize resources for financing projects specifically designed to improve food production systems, the nutritional level of the poorest populations in developing countries and the conditions of their lives.

The European Union has a status of a simple observer in the IFAD Governing Council and works with the International Fund on specific projects.
