From 23 May to 2 June, EUCAP Nestor organized the first module of four two-week First Aid training courses for the Somaliland Coast Guard in Hargeisa as part of its maritime capacity building efforts in Somaliland.
The First Aid Training was delivered by qualified staff from the Edna Adan University Hospital in Hargeisa. A total of up to 40 personnel, divided into 4 groups, attended the medical training courses. Some of the participants, subject to a favourable assessment of the Hospital staff, may be selected and become eligible for further, advanced medical training.
The expected outcome of this activity is to form a core of qualified First Aid medical first responders within the SLCG organisation. The participants to the course originated from Zeyla, Berbera, Mayth, Las Quoray and Hargeisa.
On completion, the candidates were issued with a certificate. Students from the operational bases along the coast were issued with a First-Aid pouch and some additional equipment to assist them in their duties as medical responders. The next three modules will be completed before October 2015.
The students unanimously confirmed the benefit of this training and hope that further, more advanced training will be carried out to improve the medical support for the Somaliland Coast Guard; and also to provide initial support to seafarers, refugees and migrants in need of medical assistance whilst at sea.
