‘The agreement reached between President Martelly, on the eve of completing his mandate, and the Presidents of the Haitian Senate and Chamber of Deputies is a step in the right direction. Its implementation should ensure the stability and continuity of the State. It should also ensure that the electoral process leading to the appointment of the next President elected by the Haitian people is upheld and, at the same time, finalise the elections of the deputies and senators.
It is important to preserve the right of the Haitian people to choose their government democratically during this period of change, with peace and determination, while respecting the law and rejecting all forms of violence.
The European Union is prepared to assist with the implementation of this agreement. It will continue to give its full support in addressing the challenges and the need for reforms that the country's economic and social situation requires.’
