Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, has today announced the appointment of 5 Senior Management posts in the European External Action Service (EEAS).
Edita HRDA has been appointed as Managing Director Americas for the EEAS. Ms Hrda is currently Ambassador of the Czech Republic to the United Nations. She is a senior Czech diplomat who has also served as Ambassador in the Americas and Caribbean region and Director General in the Czech Foreign Ministry.
Koen VERVAEKE, currently Director for Horn of Africa, East & Southern Africa and Indian Ocean in the European External Action Service and Senior EU Coordinator for the Great Lakes region has been appointed as Managing Director Africa. He is a senior Belgian diplomat who has also served in the past as EU Special Representative and Head of the European Union Delegation to the African Union in Addis Ababa and as Principal Africa advisor to High Representative/Secretary General of the Council of the EU, Javier Solana.
Lotte KNUDSEN, currently Director for Human Development and Migration in DG International Cooperation and Development in the European Commission has been appointed as Managing Director Human Rights, Global and Multilateral Issues for the EEAS. Ms Knudsen is a senior EU official who has also served in the past as Director in DG Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizens and has worked on criminal justice, security and the fight against terrorism.
Gunnar WIEGAND has been appointed as Managing Director Asia and Pacific for the EEAS. Mr Wiegand is currently Director for Russia, Eastern Partnership, Central Asia, Regional Cooperation and OSCE in the EEAS. He is a senior EU official who has served in the external relations field since 1990 in various roles, including as Spokesman for a former Commissioner responsible for External Relations.
Mr Gianmarco DI VITA, who is currently Director Resources in the Secretariat General of the European Commission, has been appointed to the post of Director General for Budget and Administration. He is a senior EU official who has served in the European Commission in the field of human and financial resources in various positions. He also participated in the Task Force on the administrative reform of the European Commission (1999 – 2001).
Together with the appointments earlier this year of Mr Christian LEFFLER as Deputy Secretary General for Economic and Global Issues, Mr Pedro SERRANO as Deputy Secretary General for CSDP and Crisis Response, Mr Nicholas WESTCOTT as Managing Director Middle East and North Africa and Mr Thomas MAYR-HARTING as Managing Director for Europe and Central Asia – and with Ms. Helga SCHMID as Deputy Secretary General for Political Affairs/Political Director - this completes the Senior Management team of the EEAS.
